Prof. Clive Woods

Background information:

Instructional outcomes: At the end of the course, students should be able to:

* design and construct simple optical systems

* characterize and measure the performance of optical components

* explain laser operation

* analyze faults in fiber optical networks

* predict limits for, and optimize the performance of, optical systems

Design experience: This course provides experience in the design of optical systems and the interconnection of fiber networks. Many of the test problems are design-based and do not have unique solutions. In addition, the laboratory experiments may be performed in many different ways, and students are encouraged to explore other optical applications in the laboratory.

Estimated ABET Professional component:

* Engineering Science: 2 credits, or 67%

* Engineering Design: 1 credit, or 33%
